Oxfam

Finding lasting solutions to poverty and injustice.
Present in 98 countries worldwide.
In many ways, Oxfam encapsulates in one organization the various functions of a modern NGO. It engages in humanitarian work, assisting those immediately affected by conflict and natural disasters. It implements development programs, seeking to lift communities out of poverty with long-term, sustainable solutions. It lobbies and advocates, in a bid to affect policy decisions on the causes of conflict at local, national, and international levels. It undertakes in-depth and rigorous research into best practices and structural challenges. And it does all of these things effectively and to the highest standards.

Though Oxfam International was founded as recently as 1995, when a group of independent NGOs came together to achieve greater impact on the international stage in reducing poverty and injustice, the organization traces its roots to the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief, established in Britain in 1942. This group campaigned for food supplies to be sent through an allied naval blockade to starving women and children in enemy-occupied Greece during World War II, but by 1960 had already grown into a major international actor.
Today, Oxfam has a presence in nearly 100 countries, working closely with thousands of local partner organizations. A single-minded commitment to the eradication of poverty worldwide underpins all activities it pursues, whether relief, development or advocacy oriented. Within this framework, the organization has recently identified four key 'change goals', to guide its work up to 2012: economic justice, essential services, rights in crisis and gender justice.
These priorities are evident across a number of recent Oxfam activities. In Nepal, the organization is working with people from the Dhola community to build their first-ever community seed and grain bank, addressing long-term food security and enabling them to better take advantage of fluctuating market prices. In Haiti, Oxfam responded to the devastating earthquake by providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene training, temporary shelter and seeds, and organizing cash for work and cash grants programs – reaching over 300,000 people. On the humanitarian front, Oxfam has set a goal of becoming the leading international NGO working on water, sanitation and hygiene promotion.
Perhaps the most ambitious recent initiative the organization has launched is its worldwide campaign for a 'Financial Transaction Tax'. Known variously as the 'Robin Hood tax' or 'tax against poverty', this small levy on bankers would be used to fund poverty relief and other programs globally. With its combination of passion and practicality, the initiative captures in a nutshell the qualities that have led to Oxfam's success.

Partners in Health

Over the last 25 years, Partners In Health has provided health care to the world's poor, fueled by a simple credo: "whatever it takes" – to do for their patients exactly what they would do for a member of their own family. For their patients, this could mean receiving basic nutrition or being airlifted from Haiti to Boston for a life-saving emergency treatment. Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners In Health, is the nucleus of this effort. Inspiring in his own right, Farmer navigated his way from living in a school bus as a child to attending Duke University with a full scholarship.

It was his education at Duke that led Farmer to Haiti for one year before attending Harvard Medical School - and there, working with now Executive Director Ophelia Dahl, his vigor for fighting infectious disease took hold.
Dahl and Farmer co-founded Partners In Health in Boston, three years after their initial trip to Haiti, operating one clinic on its Central Plateau. What started out as a small community clinic for the village of Cange has grown to a vast medical center complete with a full-service, 104-bed hospital, an infectious disease center, a women's health clinic, a laboratory, a pharmaceutical warehouse, a Red Cross blood bank and about a dozen schools. Their pilot initiative has been replicated and expanded to another dozen sites across Haiti and into the Dominican Republic and the model is further being replicated in 12 countries.
For Partners In Health, it is not enough just to offer free medical services. They have found through their tireless commitment to serving the poor that the proliferation of illness needs to be addressed at the root causes of poverty. A range of barriers can exist to prevent someone from seeking medical care - distance, social stigma or a lack of information to name a few. Paramount to their success is the engagement of community health workers. Partners In Health hires and trains local workers to assist patients through treatment, monitor their needs for food, water and housing, provide health education and deliver care and medicine to their homes. All patients being treated for HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis are paired with a worker at the outset of their diagnosis. The high quality treatment and daily visits of community health workers have significantly lengthened the lifespan of patients.
For over two decades, Partners In Health has transformed conventional thinking on health care among the world's poorest populations. Their proven sincerity towards the "whatever it takes" philosophy and their holistic approach to health care has sparked national and international commitments to fighting infectious disease worldwide.

Aata Odanaata – A Sports NGO

Aata Odanaata – A Sports NGO Author-Rajani Radhakrishnan
Meet Sheetal Suryavanshi Mahendra and her old sports buddies Lakshmi Hariharan, Lakshmi SS and Shoba Aval., former Karnataka under-21 cricket, handball and baseball players: A motley crew on a mission.

It has been a while since they hung up their cricketing gear and the kookaburra in their hands was replaced by a mouse, but now they’re ready to don their spikes and pull that baseball cap back over their heads. These 25-somethings want to give back. To that little boy whose eyes light up when he sees the ball soar into the crowd, but cannot afford a bat, to that young girl who can run like the wind but has never heard of Nikes or stopwatches, to all those youngsters with hordes of talent who display it where no one ever watches them play. They came together with the idea and before you can say “Game, Set and Match”, Aata Odanaata was born.

With a big dream and a whole lot of will, and nothing much else, they set themselves to work. Aata Odanaata, (means Sports and Bonding in Kannada) the NGO they created, aims at spreading sports awareness amongst economically challenged kids. It hopes to involve itself in sports education, conducting sporting events and teaching basic health and hygiene to youngsters in rural schools, orphanages and city slums. It will work to identify and nurture talent through sponsored training and mentoring. It will collaborate with other NGOs to create sporting opportunities for special kids. It will bring in recognized sportspersons and coaches to mentor and train its target talent pool.

AO has tied up with Sikshana , an NGO that has adopted over 130 schools in Kanakapura Taluk in Karnataka. Here volunteers meet with the kids every week and engage them in sports and hygiene instruction. The first Shikshana 20-20 cricket event is scheduled to commence soon. An event will be conducted this month for kids being rehabilitated by Makkala Jagriti, a local NGO. AO is working with the Usha School of Athletics to bring in training practices and mentoring from their athletic coaches. Under the U.S.H.A banner, athletic events will be conducted here. National and regional sportsmen from other fields are being drawn into the fold to meet and instruct beneficiaries.

Aata Odanaata is the inspiration of four sportspersons. Funded entirely by corporates and individuals with big hearts and sporting inclinations. Helped by students, friends, families and geeky techies from around the city. Ravindra Krishnappa from Shikshana had this to say: “We at Sikshana are pleased with the fact that NGOs like "Aata Odanaata" are working in clearly demarcated areas where they can be called upon for complementary help especially sports. We hope that the presence of "role models" will act as a catalyst to the children and they blossom with all-round development…”

Aata Odanaata needs you too. If you still have those old sports shoes, those trophies behind the cupboard, that love for competitive sports and for all things good and clean, if you have the time and the willingness to make this work…come join the team. Be a volunteer, a coach, a contributor or a well wisher. Come play with the kids, help them learn and watch them win. Become an AO Buddy Today.
